The Two Gates

December 27, 2010

We just celebrated the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As many times as I have quoted the Words of Jesus on this site, there are now and always will be a few who just cannot fathom the reality of what it was He said in John 14:6. As Christians, our whole argument is fundamentally built around what He claimed…that HE was and always will be the ONLY way to God.

Because of pride, some will never allow themselves to become humble enough to accept the Truth that there are only two gates in this life by which we can pass through…two. No more. We choose one or the other.

Jesus teaches that there is a narrow gate and a wide gate. That’s it folks. There isn’t any of this “All roads lead to God” talk here from Jesus. In Matthew 7:13-14, He says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the path that leads to destruction, and MANY enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a FEW will find it.”

Obviously, we can see here that both of these gates lead to different roads or paths. The narrow gate is the most difficult to pass through. Luke records Jesus saying in Luke 13:24, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.” Yet on the other hand, the wide gate opens onto a broad road that many take. These two gates lead to VERY different places according to the Lord Himself. Now, there have been many attempts over the centuries to confuse the two roads…or to insist that both roads really lead to the same place. The confident majority always tries to justify its decision to boldly take the path of the broad road and many times, make fun of those of us in the minority who have chosen to enter through the narrow gate. You see it frequently in the conversations with non-Christians.

Unfortunately, there are only small handfuls today that make an effort to point out the differences in the gates and in the destinations of each, which are radically different. I must say however, that I am greatly encouraged to see a sudden influx of new people who are coming to this BLOG and are giving great effort in learning how to defend their faith so that they too, may tell others of the difference and consequences of these two very different gates. I am truly excited at their potential as they eagerly learn God’s Word and begin to put forth its practical applications in fighting this Good Fight.

What you don’t see is the number of people who are visiting here each week but don’t comment. That doesn’t mean they aren’t taking in what the Lord wants them to see.

At this time I am sincerely asking that those who are skeptics, to truly try to comprehend what Jesus is saying of Himself. Let’s look a few of the Scriptures where Jesus claims to actually BE the narrow gate:
John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the WAY, the TRUTH and the LIFE: NO MAN can come to the Father BUT by ME.”

John 10:7-9 “Therefore Jesus said again, ‘I tell you the Truth, I AM THE GATE for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I AM THE GATE; whoever enters THROUGH ME will BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture’”.

John 11:25-26 “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the Resurrection and the Life. He who believes in Me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in Me will NEVER die. Do you believe this?’”

In this last verse, He is talking to Martha, the brother of Lazarus, who had just died and been buried. I love how He asks her before He raises Lazarus from the dead, “Do you believe this”? That is the same question He asks of everyone today…do you believe Him or not?
Every single one of us has a free will. We each choose to either accept or reject His claims.

I’ve read arguments about how we can’t trust whether Jesus truly existed or not. This is truly hogwash! Again, you must hold that same standard to any and every historical figure of antiquity. Are you intellectually honest enough to do that? The point here is that whether we reject it or not, it would be ridiculous for any of us to say that Jesus did NOT claim to be the narrow gate. If Jesus IS Who He claimed to be, then the gate is very narrow indeed. So narrow in fact, that the Bible says that NO man or woman can even see the gate unless God provides them supernatural help! By the way, when as a Christian, you are called “narrow minded”….where it as a badge of honor, for nothing could be Truer.

Now, when Jesus had officially begun His public ministry, He read the following portion from the Scroll of Isaiah to the synagogue leaders in Nazareth: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the Good News to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke 4:18-19

Jesus also said in John 6:44, “No one can come to Me unless the Father Who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” The Apostle Paul preached the same message when he told King Agrippa what Jesus had called him to do as recorded by Doctor Luke in Acts 26:17-18. Here, he recounts what happened when Christ appeared to him on the road to Damascus. This was what Jesus commissioned to him as he was preparing to persecute more Christians and have them killed: “I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to Light. And from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those are sanctified by faith in Me.” I pray you are now beginning to see that we are not going to find that narrow gate without God’s help. It is a difficult task indeed, for man’s pride and the distractions of this world are great. Satan knows all to well our weaknesses, and he knows how to set the trap to keep us looking for other “ways”.

Almost on any post at a Christian forum site, you can find someone saying words to the effect of “The teachings of Jesus were to tell us not to judge others. Besides, who’s to say that His way is the ONLY way?” Right? Well, I must proclaim here and now that it is ONLY the teachings of Jesus Christ that reveal the narrow gate. Jesus also insisted that HIS Words where the ONLY Words that would lead us to the narrow gate (Himself) and through that gate to eternal life. Notice in these verses that He is not just claiming that He got these ideas out of the blue:
I tell you the Truth, whoever hears My Word and believes in Him Who sent Me has eternal life and will NOT be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” John 5:24

“Jesus answered them, My teaching is not My Own. It comes from Him Who sent Me. If anyone CHOOSES to do God’s will, he will find out whether My teaching comes from God or whether I speak on My Own.” John 7:16-17

“Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.” John 8:32

“But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw ALL men to myself.” John 12:32

“Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth.” John 17:17
These are Words that EVERY person that has ever read them must consider. It is extremely, EXTEMELY hard for those who have presuppositions in their mind set, to even accept the possibility that His Words are True. Their world view won’t allow it. But once any person has read them…and yes, that includes any atheists, skeptics and agnostics who just read them…you are now faced with the reality of what you must do with them. You MUST decide at some point whether He is Who He says He is…THE ONLY WAY.

You see, here’s the thing; we will NEVER find the gate that leads to eternal life unless we pay attention to the Words that God has spoken to us through His Son, Jesus Christ.

“In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, Whom He appointed heir of all things, and through Whom He made the universe. Hebrews 1:1-3

“We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away. For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, how shall we escape if WE ignore such a great salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.” Hebrews 2:1-4

So you see, now that you have heard the Good News, you have NO excuse. Yes, you can still reject this Truth that Jesus is the ONLY way since He IS the gate by which we MUST pass if we truly desire eternal life…but…you will not be able to stand before Jesus Christ on the Day of Judgment and say no one ever told you. It may sound harsh or cold…yet it is True. Just because Truth is hard to take because it may go against your presuppositions, does not mean it wasn’t given in love…for it IS love to share the Truth…regardless of how painful or hurtful it may be. If it causes eternal change in one’s life…there is nothing of more worth. I pray you consider His Words carefully if you are seeking Him this day.

In Christ,
